The Behring family’s history in Jiu Jitsu is a direct reflection of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s own history, beginning in 1947 when Flavio Behring began his martial arts training and education in Jiu Jitsu at the hands of the great, Grand Master Helio Gracie at the age of 10. After a lifetime in the art, Flavio Behring holds the prestigious rank of Grand Master, 9th degree Red Belt.

Our own Professor Tom had this to say about our Grand Master:

During the first private lesson he gave me, he asked to see my basic technique in self defense and BJJ. I had been a brown belt with two stripes already. After a long time he said to me, ‘Paul, that was very good, however, that was a lot like Rickson style of Jiu-Jitsu. The problem is you are not Rickson! I want you to know the Helio Gracie way of doing things. The Jiu-Jitsu I have been practicing for more then 60 years.’ And so started my relearning of Gracie/ Flavio Behring Jiu-Jitsu. Over four more years of learning under GM Behring and Professor Rob Handley I was given something that I hold dearest of all things outside of my wife and children and that was a certificates from a GRAND MASTER that says that Paul Tom is recognized as a Black Belt Professor of Behring Jiu-Jitsu! I don’t know how many professors have been promoted by a grand master, but I know I was!
